“Gold Panning.” Recommended for ages 5 and up, kids will get an opportunity to try their hand at panning for gold, much like John Bidwell and other pioneers would have in the 1800s. However, unlike the folks during the Gold Rush, children participating in the Summer Programs are guaranteed to find real gold! Gold panning will take place on the mansion grounds, so there is no concern about getting wet or muddy, just about getting Gold Fever! The cost of gold panning is $4 per child. All programs are first come-first served. Children must be accompanied by an adult while participating in these programs. The California Pecan Growers Association will hold its annual meeting on August 4th and 5th in Chico, and will feature exciting new discussions on topics for new and current pecan growers. Dr. Bruce Wood, Research Leader of the ARS Fruit and Tree-Nut Research Lab in Byron, GA, will discuss nutrient interactions in pecan orchards. Dr. Richard Heerema from New Mexico State University will be discussing orchard floor management. California growers will present their experiences in a panel discussion. Other speakers will present topics that are still in the planning stage, but will include aphid control, new orchard establishment, and marketing. Dinner and presentations at the Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico, and continue on Tuesday morning with field tours of grower orchards. This meeting includes information for growers who are interested in planting pecans. The pecan industry in CA is composed of a few thousand acres, mostly in the Visalia-Fresno area and in the Sacramento Valley. On Tuesday, August 5, 2008 neighborhoods throughout Chico are joining forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the “25th Annual National Night Out” crime and drug prevention event. This event is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, Target, and Chico Police. From 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. residents in Chico Neighborhoods and across the nation are asked to turn on outside lights and spend the evening OUTSIDE WITH NEIGHBORS and police. Many neighborhoods throughout Chico will be hosting a variety of events such as block parties, cookouts, visits from police and city staff, flashlight walks, ice cream feeds, etc. The public event kicks off in City Plaza at 5:30 p.m. on August 5. Dignitaries will welcome the citizens of Chico and officially start the evenings festivities. There will be a variety of food vendors from local restaurants in City Plaza and there will be a FREE CONCERT presented by “BIG MO AND THE FULL MOON BAND.” Also in concert will be international guitarist’s Volker Strifler and Volker Haid.
