Preserving Stories of Service for the Future Generations

Date: Jan 1, 2008

Time:TBA

Contact Info: 530-321-8805 - Kelly Birchfield

We are appealing to all Veterans and Civilians to come forth and tell your story. These stories are videotaped and archived by the Library of Congress and hopefully accessible via Internet. The House of Representatives has recently voted unanimously to set forth for the Veterans History Project (VHP). The Chico community students including: the Sea Cadets, Paradise and Chico High Schools, and Chico State College Students, would like to honor local Veterans by participating in this project. Chico High School teachers, including John Gulliam, are committing approximately 700 students to the Veterans History Project. Paradise High School is committing approximately 350 students and Red Bluff will also commit to this project. We have approximately 1200 students participating this spring in the VHP. The students will attend a Library of Congress sponsored workshop, given by an oral historian / professional, certified interviewer. The training set forth by this workshop will equip these students to convey an accurate portrayal of each Veterans recounting of the War events. The students will begin their training for VHP in January 2008 and the interview process will continue through April 2008. To further the quality of the interviewing and videotaping process, Percy Ledbetter, a Butte College professor, has agreed to provide and operate video equipment once a month. Thus, giving us the option of videotaping the veteran interviews for the Library of Congress at our local Elks Lodges. The Chico Elks Lodge has graciously offered to host the VHP throughout the months of February and March 2008. We will have approximately 10 to 15 cameras placed in different locations (possibly different sites) for the convenience of the veterans to participate in the interviewing process. The option of taking video cameras to the veteran’s location (such as their home) will be provided upon request. Kelly Birchfield Molatore, Ph. 530-321-8805, or 530-824-0774 or John & Joan Schulz ph. 530-342-8805 Mailing address: Chico Elks Lodge 1705 Manzanita Ave. Chico, CA 95926
